Woman Pulled From Detroit River

"WINDSOR, Ont. -- Police are treating the death of a woman pulled from the Detroit River early Sunday morning as suspicious.

About 7 a.m., a white woman, between 45 and 60 years old, was pulled from the water near Riverside Drive and Caron Avenue.

Andrew Torell, 32, was fishing nearby when he saw fire trucks “come wheeling down” to the river. Torell said he walked over to the rocks where people had gathered and saw a woman floating face down in the water.

A couple walking by the river discovered the body at about 6:45 a.m., witnesses said.

Police recovered a key from the body, Torell said.

Windsor police Staff Sgt. Tammy Fryer said an autopsy was performed on the body in London Monday. The results were not available at press time.

“Hopefully that autopsy will give us more information to determine which way the investigation goes,” said Staff Sgt. Dave Kigar. “It could be accidental, it could be suicide or it could be homicide. We’re looking at all three of these equally at this point.”

Windsor Police have ruled out foul play in the death of a 59-year-old woman who was found in the Detroit River last month.

Police and the coroner’s office have completed a preliminary investigation into the death of Patricia Morencie, Windsor police Sgt. Brett Corey said Friday.

The Windsor woman’s body was found May 20 around 7 a.m. in the water at the foot of Caron Avenue.

Police said the woman lived alone in the area.

Autopsy results will not be released, police said, however, the coroner’s office said there was evidence of drowning.

Investigators are still asking for the public’s help in retracing Morencie’s steps and activities in the time leading up to her death.

She was white and had short grey/blond hair. Police said she was 5’1″ and 130 pounds with a small build. At the time of her death she was wearing a pink shirt over a black tank top, blue pants and black and white running shoes.
