One Man Dies, Missing Woman In Water

Why were two people found in the Detroit River on a cold January 31st? It's not uncommon for one body to be found- but two? The report did not indicate if they were out on the ice, if it was recreational, or if there was foul play involved. What was behind the criminality of this case? Was there ever a reason disclosed by the police or did the story just fade away? Did the Windsor Police Service ever discover what happened? Was is it ever confirmed that there was a woman in the water? Did anyone report this woman missing as time passed? Were the two simply out exploring on the ice or is there more to this story? One man is in critical condition and the search for a second possible victim was suspended Wednesday night following an emergency call earlier in the day about two people in the Detroit River.

The man pulled out of the water in the afternoon was described as 53 years old. A Windsor police spokesman told the Star Wednesday night that a search by officers, firefighters and the U.S. Coast Guard continued into the evening before being called off. He said the police department’s major crimes unit would continue to investigate Thursday morning.

Police first responded to a report around 1:15 p.m. about two people in the Detroit River near Riverside Drive and McEwan Avenue. Officers arrived and found one person in the water at California Avenue and Riverside Drive near the Ambassador Bridge. That person was rushed to hospital.

“We believe there is still one other person that is outstanding and the coast guard is searching the area,” Windsor police Const. Andrew Drouillard said around 3 p.m.

The search continued into the night before being suspended. A police spokesman said later there was some question over whether or not a second individual was actually in the river.

A man found Wednesday floating face down in the icy waters of the Detroit River died in hospital Thursday.

Windsor police said a witness also reported seeing a woman in the water, but that person has not been found.

Emergency crews received a report around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday about two people in the Detroit River near the 1500 block of Riverside Drive West. A witness, who was across the street at a house on Riverside Drive, told police she had seen a man and a woman in the water.

Officers found a man floating face down in the water. Firefighters pulled him out of the river and helped paramedics try to revive him. He was taken to hospital in critical condition. Police said the 53-year-old man died Thursday in hospital.

After pulling him out of the water, crews continued to search the area for the second person. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew also joined the search, but they couldn’t find the missing woman.

The search has been suspended but police are still trying to determine if there was a second person in the water. Drouillard said police have not received any missing persons reports that might relate to this case.

“Our major crimes unit is still investigating, they’re investigating the possibility of a second person,” he said. “There’s no ongoing search but we are investigating.”
